Summer Program

 

Istanbul, June 27- July 29, 2011

 

OBJECTIVE

 

Following recommendations of the 1st International Conference for Urban Heritage in the Islamic Countries, held in May 2010 in Riyadh, organized by SCTA, on the importance of preservation and economic and cultural development of the urban heritage of the Islamic countries;

 

The summer program will be held focusing on:

 

·         Research and studies, and documentation of urban heritage sites and buildings as a right base for the further development of " the Prince Sultan bin Salman Architectural Heritage Database" 

·         Technical expertise and design of preservation &urban development projects

·         Management planning evaluation of the economic and social impact, and finding appropriate financial solutions

 

The program will prepare young educators and professionals capable to move up concepts of urban heritage preservation in different educational and governmental levels. This Program is particularly targeting tourism managers, staff in municipalities and universities, and practitioners in the field of preservation of urban heritage.



PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND CREDITS

 

The program will be accessible to 32 graduates, who hold BA in architecture, urban planning, art history, history, civil engineering and project management. Courses will be in English and will conclude with presentation of the studio works of the groups and individual researches.

Participants will receive a certificate corresponding 30 ECTS issued and signed by the organizer institutes and universities for the successful completion of the program.

 

 

THE SUMMER PROGRAM CERTIFICATE

 

A successful completion of the program will be awarded by the Certificate issued and signed by organizers: Research centre for Islamic history, art and culture (IRCICA),Istanbul - Al-Turath foundation, Riyadh - Yildiz technical university, Istanbul - Prince sultan bin salman chair for urban heritage, K.S.U.- Politecnico di bari - Prince's school of traditional arts, London - University of Sarajevo and Istanbul metropolitan planning center.

PROGRAM PERIOD AND DATES

 

Summer program is arranged as a five week program with lectures, studio work, individual research and field trips. The first course will be held on June 27th 2011 and the last on July 29th.

 

Participants will present their studio works and individual researches in the last week. Working hours will be on Sunday-Thursday from 09:30 to 18:00, on Friday and Saturday from 09:30 to 14:00 including noon breaks. Field trips will be held in the second week (July 6th-9th), third week (July 14th-15th) and in the fourth week (July 21st-22nd).

 

·         Venue: IRCICA & YTU, Yildiz Palace, Besiktas, Istanbul

 

·         Working language: English. The graduate should be able to read, write, speak and understand English on an academic level.  

 

PROGRAM FEE

 

The tuition fee for the program per participant is $4000. This includes course materials, field trip transportations, lunches, administrative service and transportation. Summer program fee (tuition and housing) per participant will be between 4.500 and 5.500$ dependent on lodging. Program administration can provide further assistance for lodging and obtaining visa. A visa support letter will be

given confirming the applicant participation in the program.

 

 

APPLICATION

 

The deadline of the application and for the payment of the course is 15 May 2011. Applying for this

Program implies acceptance of the terms and conditions of the summer program.

 

PROGRAM STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS

 

The program is comprised of lectures (L), studio work (S) and individual research (P). Lectures will be held in 45 hours, studio work will be 85 hours including three field trips and individual researches should be developed within 30 hours with the instructors.

On Preservation

Contemporary Approach to Preservation of Building Heritage / International Legislation / Planning in Historic Context / Design in Historic Urban Context/ Preservation of Urban heritage in Istanbul / Structural Aspects of Preservation / Wooden, Stone and Adobe Architecture and their Preservation / Methods and Techniques in Active Preservation of Building Heritage / Environment and Adobe Architecture in Saudi Arabia Today.

 

On Management

What we can learn from World Heritage Sites Management / Historic Urban Landscape Approach in the Preparation of the Management Plan / Management plan: Governing, Finance, Planning, Programming, Intervention / Tourism and Heritage/ Management of Historic sites in Turkey: Istanbul, Bursa, Mardin, Safranbolu, Antakya, Riyadh and Jeddah.

 

 

STUDIO WORK 

 

Participants will develop project in Istanbul selected in collaboration with the authority of the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul or in their own countries in collaboration with their municipalities. Studio work will take in total 85 hours, including site visits and final presentation. Presentations of the groups will be in the last week of the program.  For the operational reasons, participants will be organized in four groups which will be supervised by four professors and their assistants. Supervisors should be selected in May 2011 based on the majority of participants' countries of origin.  

  • Lectures (L) by internationally recognized professors and experts (45 hours)
  • Studio work (S) – development of one selected project in Istanbul (85 hours, including site visits and final presentation). Studio will develop one project and participants will be organized in four groups.
  • Each participant should develop individual research and present it in a form of seminar papers (P) during the last week of the program (30 hours work with instructors)
  • Three field visits to important urban heritage sites

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The deadline of the application for individuals and for the payment of the course is 15 June 2011.

Applying for this Program implies acceptance of the terms and conditions of the summer program. In order  to apply for the program, application form should be filled. The form can be found on the website www.al-turath.com and should be sent to al-turath@al-turath.com until the deadline. The receipt will be sent as an e-mail once the application is received.

Program administration will evaluate applications in cooperation with the program lecturers and will Inform the applicant. After receiving the e-mail of acceptance, the fee of the program should be transferred to the following bank account:

Senior participants can join the program for one program component (one week duration) and each component will be treating as a seminar:

 

  • Week  One: History and Theory (Monday, June 27 – Sunday, July 3, 2011)
  • Week  Two: Management of Heritage (Monday, July 04 – Sunday, July 10, 2011)
  • Week Three: Documentation (Monday, July 11 – Sunday, July 17, 2011)
  • Week  Four: Preservation practice (Monday, July 18 – Sunday, July 24, 2011)
  • Week  Five: Final Panels on Research, Presentation and Management (Monday, July 25 – Saturday, July 29, 2011)

 

Participation fee for Week  One,Three, Four and Five is $1.000.- US each, and for Week  Two (including a field trip) is $1.500.-US.

 

 

SAFETY AND HEALTH

 

Participants should obtain individual health insurance before their arrival. While travelling to Turkey, you should keep your passport and insurance papers with you. Further assistance can be provided by program administration.

 

 

 

TERMS & CONDITIONS

 

Applying for this Program implies acceptance of the terms and conditions of the summer program which are stated below as following:

1.       The Program administration undertakes to deliver the Summer program as advertised in the promotion documents and provisional course programs which are published on its website, but it reserves the right to make minor changes in the course programs if circumstances so require.

2.       The Program administration will organize assistance for arranging visa.

3.       The Program administration will organize assistance for lodging.

4.       The Program administration will organize pickups from the airport for participants.

5.       The participants of the program may use the facilities of the IRCICA and Yildiz Technical University (YTU) for example for doing their homework or checking their emails, insofar as that usage is compatible with other activities of the program administration and the work of the program administration staff.

6.       Within the range of its possibilities, the program administration will help participants who need assistance with problems they face in or outside the course. Although the Program administration tries to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of participants during the summer program, it cannot accept responsibility, and exclude liability, for loss or damage to participants' personal property, including any financial or other consequential loss.

7.       The Program administration cannot be held responsible for any injury to a participant, or financial or other loss or damage resulting from such injury, or for damage to property, caused by any other participant, or by any person who is not an employee of or a person operating on behalf of the program.

8.       By applying for this summer Program, participants commit themselves to:

-          be aware and understand that the summer courses take place in Turkey, a country with its own laws and social and cultural rules which may be different from what the participants are used to;

-          Show respectful and appropriate behavior towards fellow participants, course lecturers, and summer program staff members.

9.       By applying for this summer Program, participants commit themselves to comply with the instructions from the course lecturers and/or the administration regarding attendance, participation in class and during excursions, assignments and homework.

10.   Participants who apply for this summer program have to arrange a health insurance coverage which covers them during their stay in Turkey. If that is not the case, the program administration advices the participants to obtain additional health insurance coverage. At the moment a participant shows signs of illness, he or she must inform the staff of administration immediately. The administration advices all participants to obtain a travel insurance for their stay in Turkey as well.

11.   If the course does not run, the program administration will reimburse the tuition fee one week after the announcement of the cancellation.

12.    Apart from the case of cancellation, the Summer program administration will only partially reimburse the course fee in the first two weeks after the arrival of the participant in Turkey in case of a grave medical condition of the participant which inhibits him or her to travel to Turkey and which is proven by a doctor's attest. The program administration will under no circumstances reimburse the course fee or any part of it after the first two weeks of the program.

13.   Participants who apply for the summer program agree that the program administration sends their emergency and passport information, which they provided in the application form, to their respective embassies in Turkey for security and safety reasons.

14.  The administration of the summer program cannot be held responsible for any loss, damage or expense resulting from any delay, variation or failure in the provision of services or facilities relating to the program, arising from circumstances beyond the administration.
